You won't find any session player here just huge beats and even though there are only 60 breaks, they're all designed for phatness...

Planet Of The Breaks bills itself as a break CD that's a little out of the ordinary. Rather than a collection of nicked beats or "rock" loops provided by a semi-famous session drummer, all these loops are designed for phatness.

But hang on, is taking specially-designed beats off a sample CD as 'real' as finding them yourself? Shawn does ask for a credit when you use his loops on a release but if you want to maintain any sort of hip hop credibility then you'll have to make sure it's ensconced away with the rest of the small print.

Ethical issues aside, here are 60 tracks each featuring a single groove that lasts for at least 16 bars. Some of the tracks just feature drums, but others (helpfully notated by a peace icon) have all sorts of crazy stuff going on, ranging from subtle piano chords in the background to abstract effects and huge organs. Presumably it's done to make them sound more impressive, but it's quite irritating if you want a clean break. Other breaks start off clean, then processing is applied until they sound almost unrecognisable.

There might only be 60 breaks here, but if you're after beats these are some of the best money can buy. Plus, with a little work no-one will be able to recognise them as nicked off a CD, so you can have your cake and eat it. Hurrah!
